Always on the side of the egg

四国出張だったので、じっくりと見ることができなかった、村上春樹のエルサレム賞の受賞スピーチを昼休みにプリンタに出力して読みました。
世の中から、１週間遅れです・・・・

でも、さすが村上春樹さんですね。よいスピーチですねぇ。

"Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg."
「高く、固い“壁”と、それにぶつかると割れてしまう“卵”があるとき、僕はいつも卵のそばにいる」

Yes, no matter how right the wall may be and how wrong the egg, I will stand with the egg. Someone else will have to decide what is right and what is wrong; perhaps time or history will decide.
　ええ、どんなに「壁」が正しく、どんなに「卵」が間違っていようとも、僕は「卵」のそばに居続けます。どこかの誰かが「何が正しくて、何が間違っているのか」を決めるとき、それはおそらく時間と歴史が決めるのでしょう。

If there were a novelist who, for whatever reason, wrote works standing with the wall, of what value would such works be?
けれどもし、どのような理由があろうとも、壁のそばに立って仕事をする小説家がいたとしたならば、その作品にはどんな価値があるというのでしょうか？

こういう表現ができるからこそ、ノーベル賞候補にもなるんでしょうね。おまけにこの内容を日本語ではなく英語でのスピーチってのが、すごいですねぇ・・・・
